Description of The National Jazz Museum

The National Jazz Museum, a nonprofit designated by the IRS as a 501[c]3 organization, was founded in 1995 by Geraldine de Haas a musician and jazz aficionado. In 1999 Barry Mayo became chair of the Board of Trustees and has focused on refining and developing the museum. The NJM's ten-member Board of Trustees and a two-person Staff are carrying out all program initiatives. The National Jazz Museum is also being advised by two board-staff appointed volunteer committees. The Program Development Advisory Committee is charged with helping the museum design, test and develop the core content and planned programs and, consults on our program initiatives towards an eventual goal to integrate the programs with the constructed museum. The Strategic Planning Committee is charged with increasing NJM's capacity to develop a physical museum in a central Chicago location. As we continue to search for a museum facility, we have been working hard developing the Education Programs including the Jazz in America youth music education series, the Oral History Project, and the Virtual Museum. The education programs of The National Jazz Museum were launched with the pilot program Jazz in America in 2001. Focusing on youth music education with a structured pedagogic approach, Jazz in America is where we begin. The intention of The National Jazz Museum is to develop programming that meets the educational needs of students, sparks the curiosity of adults and satisfies the most passionate aficionado.
