Festivals are celebrations that bring communities together and there is a beauty in the togetherness that they have. They can also be beautiful from what they are celebrating, but there is a festival out there in the world where the celebratory music, dance, costumes, and many other aspects themselves are breath-taking.
Snow & Ice Festival – Harbin, China
This festival takes place near the beginning of every year and shows off some of the most beautiful ice sculptures in the world. What’s ever more amazing is that these ice sculptures can be over 20 feet tall and there are two sections of the city dedicated to showing these sculptures for a month at a time, but they can last longer if the weather permits.
Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – New Mexico, USA
This is the largest hot air balloon festival in the world and it lasts nine days near the beginning of October. Each day has a different theme of balloons that get sent into the sky and it’s a marvel to see so many balloons in the air at once. Oddly enough, this international sensation began as a celebration of a birthday.
Carnaval – Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
This festival has beautiful music, beautiful costumes, and beautiful floats in one of the largest parades in the world. This festival takes place near the beginning of the year and lasts for five days. This celebration first began in the 1700s and is still going strong to this day, attracting people from all over the world to take part in the festivities.
Dia de los Muertos – Celebrated by Mexicans in many
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a festival that focuses on those who have passed with colorful costumes and a beautiful show of tradition and culture in late
October to early November. This is a common day to have special foods cooked,
such as horchata, carmel flan, pan de muerto, and agua de Jamaica, so not only is
the festival beautiful, the food is wonderful as well.
Lantern Festival – Pingxi, Taiwan
This festival takes place early on the year and is coupled with another event called “Fireworks in the South,” where firecrackers are used to ward off evil and disease. The lantern portion represents safety and the lanterns carry the wishes of the owner through the artwork on the lantern. The lanterns are released into the sky and it is a beautiful sight to behold. A lot takes place in mere days, but it is beautiful physically and emotionally.
White Nights Festival – St. Petersburg, Russia
It is an art festival and they showcase beauty through music, dance, and song. It takes place in the summer and lasts for months. On top of the performing arts, there a section called “Scarlet Sails,” which is based off of a children’s story. There is a fantastic fireworks display and there are many famous stars that come to perform every year.
