How to Tell What Flavored Water is Healthy

For times when water may not quench your need for something flavorful to drink, there is flavored water out there to try.

Some of these flavored waters may not be the best, but there is healthy flavored water out there to satisfy your thirst and your desire for flavor, you just have to know how to look for the healthiest options in the grocery.

Avoid sugar and sugar substitutes

A lot of “healthy” waters in the grocery will claim to have no sugar or artificial sweeteners, but you will need to the check the ingredients list to be absolutely certain there is not sugar at all. Ingredient labels can be tricky to read, and though sugar may not be labeled outright, there may be sugar substitutes to be aware of, such as aspartame, sucralose, saccharin, and sugar alcohol. Chances are, if you don’t know what exactly the name of something is, it would be better to leave it on the shelf.

Avoid waters with complex names in the ingredient list

Similar to the previous paragraph, you will need to check the ingredients list for this one. Water is supposed to be pure, so you will want to find waters that do not have a lot of ingredients to them. If a flavored water you pick up has a bunch of ingredients with names you do not recognize, then you would be better off finding a better option.

Avoid marketing gimmicks

When a flavored water promises you energy for an entire day or tells you that it will be the best thing for your skin, then chances are, they are covering up something and hoping you only look at the promise and go with it. These are the waters that likely have a lot of chemical names on their ingredient lists and though they may help with some things, they may cause other problems in the long run.

If you can, make it yourself

There are plenty of natural things you can put in water to flavor it without having to go to the store and wonder if you are buying the right thing. Some people like to get lemons and put lemon slices into their water to make lemonade, and this is perfectly acceptable since it is a natural ingredient. Other things you can mix include mint, ice cubes with fruit bits in them, or even putting water into a juice to dilute it (as long as the juice is healthy).

Stick with regular water when possible

Sometimes it’s better to just stick with the real thing: water without any flavor at all. Water is important for your body since your body is made mostly of it and uses it to keep your body cool and keep it functioning properly. Sometimes, added flavors in a water can upset your stomach if you are not used to it, and water is definitely best for whenever you are sick. Water on its own is one of the best things nature provides, so try and stick with the original whenever you can.
