Banks are financial institutions which the public use to make deposits of their money, and which can create credit. Bank branches allow users to open a bank account (usually a current account to begin with). Current accounts allow the setting up of direct debits which can be used to pay rent or bills. Banks then offer a variety of services, including lending which can be done through an overdraft, are allowing certain money to be spent on a credit card with a certain interest.
