Description of Wheatsfield Grocery

Wheatsfield Grocery is a community, member-owned store that is run cooperatively. Members elect a Board of Directors of seven who make decisions about the direction & financial health of the grocery store. Board members serve two year terms & meet once a month. These meetings are open to members. Wheatsfield Grocery first began as a buying club based at ISU. We incorporated in 1974 as the Mutual Aid Food Association (M.A.F.A.) & moved to a store front on Des Moines Avenue. Volunteers ran the whole store at that time. In the fall of 1976, M.A.F.A moved to 136 Main Street, near what is now Whiskey River. There was one paid position. In 1980, we moved down the street to our current location at 413 Douglas Avenue. Most of the remodeling & moving was done by members. Members laid tile, put in a bathroom, tore out walls & built shelves, all in the true spirit of cooperation! This is how we looked way back when! In the fall of 1985, members voted to change our name to Wheatsfield Grocery. Our share investment system enabled us to remodel again & triple inventory. We added produce, new bulk bins, vitamins & upgraded the outside of the store. Wheatsfield Grocery, Ames, Iowa.
